Two Work SPAMs

By Michael Seese

On two successive days last week, I received the following two SPAM emails.

I'm trying to figure out the point. As I (and countless infosec pros) have said before, most SPAM emails nowadays contain links to malware sites. The bad guys want you to click on the link and download their spyware to your PC, giving them access to your computer and, more importantly, the passwords to your sensitive accounts.

But these emails had no such links. So I can only guess they're simply trolling for "live" email addresses to file away or sell to someone else, who then can hammer them with more SPAM. But tactic that is so yesterday! Nonetheless, the lesson remains the same:

Don't reply. Just delete.

How about you all? Are you getting more or less SPAM these days?

  1. Spam SUCKS. I'm getting bombarded with those newsletters/deals I signed up for, but only when I need them; I don't need them every. stinking. day. Sigh. But I dooo need them, so it's a dilemma.

    1. Perhaps this is stating the obvious, but if it's a legitimate service -- but they're emailing you too often - in many cases they allow you to "manage my subscriptions."

  2. Belonging to all the yahoo groups I do, I tend to get a lot of spam (especially if someone in the group has been hacked). But I know better than to click or reply to any e-mail I don't recognize the sender.

The spam that really baffles me, though, is the spam I get on my blog. Most of the time there isn't any point to it, because there isn't an e-mail I can respond to!

    1. Well, if the SPAM on your blog is for things like Viagra or Russian brides, the point is they just want to get the message out. Said another way, they're using your blog to advertise. It's kind of like those tweets you get from "people" whose profile pictures look like eggs.

    2. Yeah, but those Russian messages might work better if they weren't in cyrillic! :)
